Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha – Londorossi Gate – Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast in Arusha, depart for Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Following registration and permit formalities, continue by vehicle across rugged mountain tracks to the Shira trailhead. Begin trekking across the beautiful Shira Plateau surrounded by open moorland, volcanic rock formations, and spectacular mountain scenery. The route offers stunning panoramic views from the very first day due to the high starting elevation. The hike takes approximately 3–4 hours before reaching Shira 1 Camp at around 3,500m. Upon arrival, enjoy hot drinks and freshly prepared dinner while admiring sunset views across the plateau. The evening is spent resting, hydrating, and adjusting to the altitude before continuing deeper into the mountain wilderness.

Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp

Day 2: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp

After breakfast, continue trekking across the expansive Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp. The trail passes through heath and moorland landscapes filled with giant heathers, volcanic rocks, and unique alpine vegetation. Along the route, climbers enjoy magnificent views of Kibo Peak, distant valleys, and surrounding mountain scenery. The hike is relatively gentle and designed to support acclimatization while allowing trekkers to appreciate the beauty of Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. The trek takes approximately 4–5 hours before arriving at Shira 2 Camp at 3,850m. After lunch, there is time for a short acclimatization walk to higher elevation before returning to camp. Spend the evening relaxing, hydrating, and preparing for the following day’s ascent toward Lava Tower.

Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Today is an important acclimatization day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. After breakfast, trek steadily toward Lava Tower at 4,630m through alpine desert terrain with dramatic volcanic scenery and sparse vegetation. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged with breathtaking views of glaciers and surrounding peaks. Lunch is served near Lava Tower before beginning the descent toward Barranco Camp. Descending after reaching higher altitude helps the body acclimatize more effectively and improves summit success. The trek takes approximately 6–7 hours and offers some of the most spectacular scenery on Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival at Barranco Camp at 3,950m, enjoy dinner beneath the towering Barranco Wall while surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes.

Accommodation: Barranco Camp

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

The day begins with the exciting climb of the famous Barranco Wall, one of Kilimanjaro’s most memorable trekking sections. Although steep in some areas, the climb is manageable with assistance from experienced mountain guides. Upon reaching the top, enjoy panoramic views of glaciers, valleys, and volcanic peaks stretching across the mountain. The trail then continues through rolling alpine terrain with several ascents and descents before arriving at Karanga Camp at 4,035m. The hike takes approximately 4–5 hours and provides additional acclimatization time at high altitude. Along the route, climbers can admire giant groundsels and unique alpine vegetation found only on Kilimanjaro. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing for the ascent to Barafu Camp.

Accommodation: Karanga Camp

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

After breakfast, continue trekking toward Barafu Camp through barren alpine desert terrain. Vegetation gradually disappears as the landscape becomes rocky, dry, and exposed to colder temperatures. The trail ascends steadily with spectacular views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks dominating the horizon. The trek takes approximately 4–5 hours and is intentionally shorter to allow climbers enough rest before summit night. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp at around 4,640m, enjoy an early dinner and spend time preparing summit gear including warm clothing, gloves, snacks, and headlamp. Your guide will conduct a final safety and summit briefing before the overnight climb begins. Rest is essential as climbers usually depart around midnight for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Shortly after midnight, begin the challenging ascent toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. Trek slowly uphill across volcanic scree toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to the summit. Reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise is an unforgettable achievement with breathtaking views above the clouds, surrounding glaciers, and the vast African plains below. After celebrating and taking photographs, descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Mweka Camp through alpine and forest zones. This demanding trekking day can take 10–14 hours in total and requires determination and endurance. Upon arrival at Mweka Camp, enjoy dinner and well-deserved rest after successfully summiting Mount Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation: Mweka Camp

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha

After breakfast, complete the final descent through lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail passes through beautiful tropical vegetation rich with colorful birds, flowers, and occasional monkey sightings. The descent takes approximately 4–5 hours and allows time to reflect on the incredible achievement of reaching Africa’s highest summit. Upon arrival at the gate, climbers receive official summit certificates before celebrating with guides and porters. Enjoy lunch before transferring back to Arusha for a relaxing evening at the hotel. Depending on your onward travel plans, you may choose to explore the city, purchase souvenirs, or simply rest after this unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure via the scenic Shira Route.
