Enjoy comfortable mountain hut accommodation, experienced guides, delicious meals, and breathtaking sunrise views before returning to Arusha after an unforgettable climbing experience.
Days: 6 days
Destinations: Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
After breakfast in Arusha, drive to Marangu Gate for registration and trek preparation. The journey takes around 3–4 hours through local villages and coffee plantations on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Once permits are completed, begin hiking through dense rainforest filled with giant trees, moss-covered trunks, and colorful birdlife. Blue monkeys and colobus monkeys are often seen along the trail. The route is gentle and well-defined, making it a comfortable first day for acclimatization. After approximately 4–5 hours of trekking, arrive at Mandara Hut located at 2,700m. Relax, enjoy dinner prepared by the mountain crew, and settle into the wooden mountain huts surrounded by forest scenery. In the evening, your guide will brief you about the next day’s climb and altitude adaptation.
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Following breakfast, continue trekking from the rainforest into the open moorland zone. The scenery changes dramatically as giant heathers, volcanic rocks, and unique giant groundsels begin to appear. The trail gradually climbs with beautiful views of Mawenzi Peak and, on clear days, Kibo Peak in the distance. Along the way, your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace to support proper acclimatization. Picnic lunch is served on the mountain before continuing toward Horombo Hut at 3,720m. The hike takes about 5–6 hours and offers excellent opportunities for photography and wildlife spotting. Upon arrival, relax with tea and snacks while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The evening is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for higher altitude conditions as temperatures become cooler overnight.
Accommodation: Horombo hut.
This extra acclimatization day greatly improves summit success and allows your body to adjust to the altitude. After breakfast, take a guided acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks or nearby higher elevations before returning to Horombo Hut for lunch and rest. The short hike offers incredible views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, volcanic terrain, and alpine vegetation unique to Kilimanjaro. Your guide will monitor your condition and explain the importance of hydration, slow walking, and altitude awareness. The afternoon is free for relaxation, journaling, photography, or socializing with climbers from around the world. Weather conditions can change quickly, creating dramatic mountain scenery and unforgettable sunsets. Dinner is served early to ensure proper rest before continuing toward base camp the following day.
Accommodation: Horombo Hut.
After an early breakfast, depart Horombo Hut and continue climbing through the alpine desert zone toward Kibo Hut at 4,700m. Vegetation becomes sparse as the trail crosses the vast saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape is dry, rocky, and lunar-like, creating one of the most unique trekking environments in Africa. The hike takes approximately 5–6 hours at a slow pace designed to conserve energy for summit night. Along the route, your guide will encourage regular hydration and monitor everyone carefully due to the increasing altitude. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon and rest after an early dinner. Your summit attempt begins around midnight, so climbers are advised to sleep, organize warm clothing, headlamps, snacks, and trekking poles before the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Around midnight, begin the most challenging and rewarding part of the climb. Trek slowly uphill under the stars using headlamps while ascending steep volcanic scree toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, continue along the snowy edge of the crater to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment with spectacular panoramic views above the clouds. After photos and celebration, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Horombo Hut. This long trekking day can take 10–14 hours in total, requiring determination and endurance. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, enjoy a warm dinner, rest your legs, and celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro summit experience.
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Accommodation: Hotel in Arusha
After breakfast, begin the final descent through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. The trail passes beautiful tropical scenery with chances to spot monkeys and exotic birds once again. The descent usually takes 5–6 hours and is less demanding, allowing time to reflect on the incredible journey to Africa’s highest mountain. At the gate, climbers receive official summit certificates before saying goodbye to the mountain crew. Enjoy a hot lunch and transfer back to Arusha where a comfortable hotel awaits. Depending on your travel plans, the evening can be spent relaxing, exploring the city, or celebrating your achievement with fellow climbers. This marks the end of your memorable 6-day Kilimanjaro adventure via the scenic Marangu Route.
