Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

After breakfast in Arusha, depart for Machame Gate on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Following registration and briefing, begin trekking through lush tropical rainforest filled with giant trees, colorful birds, and occasional monkey sightings. The trail is moderately steep and often muddy, creating an exciting introduction to the climb. Along the route, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the forest and fresh mountain air while your guides maintain a comfortable pace for acclimatization. The trek takes approximately 5–7 hours before reaching Machame Camp at 3,000m. Upon arrival, relax with hot tea and snacks while admiring the surrounding forest scenery. Dinner is served in the evening followed by a briefing about the next stage of the climb and altitude awareness.

Accommodation: Machame Camp

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp

After breakfast, continue climbing out of the rainforest into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation gradually changes to giant heathers, volcanic rocks, and open mountain landscapes with stunning views of Kibo Peak. The trail becomes steeper in some sections but rewards climbers with spectacular scenery and fresh mountain air. Along the way, stop for lunch and short breaks while your guide explains the surrounding environment and geological features of Kilimanjaro. After approximately 5–6 hours of trekking, arrive at Shira Camp located on the expansive Shira Plateau at 3,840m. The area offers breathtaking sunset views and clear night skies ideal for stargazing. Spend the evening resting, hydrating, and preparing for higher altitude conditions in the days ahead.

Accommodation: Shira Camp

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Today is an important acclimatization day featuring the “climb high, sleep low” strategy. After breakfast, trek steadily toward Lava Tower at 4,630m through alpine desert terrain with dramatic volcanic scenery. The landscape becomes dry and rocky with little vegetation, creating a unique high-altitude environment. After lunch near Lava Tower, begin descending toward Barranco Camp, allowing your body to adjust more effectively to the altitude. The descent offers magnificent views of the Barranco Valley and the famous Barranco Wall. The day’s trek takes approximately 6–7 hours and provides excellent acclimatization benefits that improve summit success. Arrive at Barranco Camp at 3,950m in time for dinner and rest while enjoying spectacular sunset views beneath towering cliffs.

Accommodation: Barranco Camp

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

The day begins with the exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, one of the most famous sections of the Machame Route. Although steep in certain areas, the climb is manageable with support from experienced mountain guides. Upon reaching the top, enjoy panoramic views of glaciers, valleys, and surrounding volcanic peaks. The trail continues through rolling alpine terrain with several ascents and descents before arriving at Karanga Camp at 4,035m. The hike takes approximately 4–5 hours, allowing additional time for acclimatization and rest at high altitude. Along the route, admire the unique mountain vegetation and open landscapes that make Kilimanjaro so special. Spend the afternoon relaxing, hydrating, and preparing for the ascent to base camp the next day.

Accommodation: Karanga Camp

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

After breakfast, continue trekking toward Barafu Camp through barren alpine desert terrain. Vegetation becomes scarce as the route climbs steadily across rocky slopes with breathtaking views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The hike takes around 4–5 hours and is intentionally shorter to allow adequate rest before summit night. Upon arrival at Barafu Camp at approximately 4,640m, enjoy an early dinner and spend time preparing your summit equipment including warm clothing, headlamp, snacks, and trekking poles. Your guide will conduct a final safety and summit briefing while explaining the overnight ascent procedure. Rest is essential as climbers usually begin the summit attempt around midnight under cold and windy mountain conditions.

Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp

Shortly after midnight, begin the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. The climb is physically demanding but incredibly rewarding as you trek slowly uphill beneath a sky full of stars. Reach Stella Point at sunrise before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak for breathtaking panoramic views above the clouds and surrounding glaciers. After photographs and celebration at the summit, descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal before continuing down to Mweka Camp through alpine and forest zones. This challenging day can take 10–14 hours in total and requires determination and endurance. Arrive at Mweka Camp in the evening for a warm dinner and well-deserved rest.

Accommodation: Mweka Camp

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha

After breakfast, begin the final descent through lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail passes through beautiful tropical vegetation filled with colorful flowers, birds, and occasional monkey sightings. The descent usually takes 4–5 hours and offers time to reflect on your incredible journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival at the gate, climbers receive official summit certificates before celebrating with the mountain crew and guides. Enjoy lunch before transferring back to Arusha for a relaxing evening at the hotel. Depending on your travel schedule, you may choose to explore the city, shop for souvenirs, or simply rest after completing this unforgettable Kilimanjaro climbing adventure via the scenic Machame Route.
